One page isn't a life just a moment in time

I spent some time the last few days reading, some of my old journals. I came across one of the entries which I had forgotten about. Well I don’t really remember everything I write. This one was about an apartment I had in college. We had gone up into the attic and found a book of old magazines which were largely in very poor condition but were from 1910 to 1919. There was nothing really terribly interesting in the magazines or at least I didn’t think there was I gave them away. However the was part of a journal in there. The journal was written by a young, women, and was from the same period as the magazines. The woman writing was worried about her brother who was over seas fighting in the War. She just referred to this as the war, which would have been World War I. Sitting there in an apartment which was probably this woman’s home where did she sit when she wrote these words, which window did she look out toward her brother and the European war. I wrote my thoughts about this person’s thoughts. I wondered then as I do now how many other journals, have similar expressions of worry and fear written on pages and never uttered aloud , always wearing the brave face for the crowds never showing fret or weakness or worry. Even today how many sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers write about family far from them in possible harms way. Words on a page the only anchor to keep them on course, keeping them from falling to their knees, or to just be the one place that fear can live and not consume you.

Many of the entries I have written and do write there were or are my thoughts in the moment and the processing of problems. Any single page out of context has a completely different meaning then the whole of several pages or even the reality of the life that is undocumented going on out side the confine of the pages of a journal. Mainly its’ not profound, nor awe inspiring or even very deep, it is just my little every day worries, celebrations, hopes, fear, success and missteps on a path to happiness and contentment.

That’s the rub though isn’t it, is the getting to that place and the bigger magic I suppose is knowing that when you are on your way is to smile because you are already there. Even if you fall, miss or even fail, there may be something gained that has made it all worth it.

What's taters precious?

So recently someone was asking me if I had a grill. I said I used to have one but it belongs to someone else now. They looked at me for a minute and the puzzled look on their face said, how does your grill belong to someone else now? Then the elevator got to the top floor oh yeah you have one of those exes. Their next question was a bit strange only because they know I’m a vegetarian, how do you grill?

I don’t really have a need to grill anything.

The second elevator got to the top floor, Oh yeah I guess you wouldn’t

I have thought about getting one because Stunt boy eats the meats and he likes the grilled meats as well. Doodle likes that stuff too but she only comes over a few times a month to eat and I liked the grilled veggies like grilled corn, veggies kabobs and I want to grill some bananas but I haven’t yet.

Seems like an awfully be price tag to grill up bananas though, but maybe some day. You never know

There are some pros and cons of hanging out with a vegetarian. Now these are generalizations and do not apply to all vegetarians. And on a scale of good to bad I’m more toward the bad side of the vegetarian world or as like to call it the normal side of the vegetarian world. To put it perspective my normal is what Vegans would call bad and would probably call me a lot of bad names too.

So starting off with the cons you know so we can end on a good note.

Cons

Vegetarians as a whole do tend to be to a bit judgey about the whole eating meat thing you’ve probably heard the chants and drums, Meat is murder and smelled the patchouli too. Eat what makes you happy is what I say and that’s why vegans call me bad names.

Some of us can be a little picky about ordering in restaurants. Many of us will drive a waiter to spiting in your food. Question after questions, Is that flavored with suet, Was that made with vegetable stock or chicken stock or were those fries done in the same oil as the chicken nuggets.

If you work in a restaurant if someone is asking this ask one question do you have allergies? If they say yes tell them the truth, if they say no, tell them what will get them to place an order. My advice is this, if you are that picky about what you eat you need to eat at home and leave the carnivores and normal people alone.

Some of us will make retching noises when we smell cooking meat, but really it doesn’t make us sick, well most of us. Hamburger does smell bad sometimes but mainly if you are doing ribs or a nice prime rib I’ll stand in the wind to smell it cooking I’m going to eat it.

Vegetarians know things you don’t want to know about your food. It’s very hard to find stuff talking about vegetarian diets and recipes without facts about why this is better for you than the omnivore diet or how replacing some animal product with this vegetable one is better. The biggest example is gelatin and pectin they do the same thing solidify foods one is an animal product and one isn’t. Most of the world knows where gelatin comes from but if you don’t ask a vegetarian and they will tell you and then you’ll be sick but you’ll go ahead and eat that jell-o or marshmallow then next time because it tastes good. If you don’t know I won’t tell you and the stuff that makes candy sour… well no one likes that answer so I’ll keep it to myself.

That’s about it on the bad side.

Pros

Cooking doesn’t take all that long for us unless it’s rice and that takes us just as long as it takes you.

If you order a pizza will all meat toppings and you live with a vegetarian that left over pizza will still be there when you get back from work, the gym or where ever it is you went. The same goes for the last what ever meat thing in the fridge you don’t have to hide it down in the veggie draw to keep your vegetarian friend away from it. It will be there later

You can generally get enough to eat for two people ordering one entrée and a few sides if you surrender the salad or at least part of it to the vegetarian.

Usually we like to cook so you can get out of that chore if you hate it.

We will usually have a compost pile or bin so if you need dirt for your flower garden find your friendly neighborhood dirty ol’ hippy freak and we will most likely give it to you for free because, we’re friendly and stuff like that. And we’ll have more in a few weeks.

If you are ever stranded out in the middle of nowhere there are to possibilities. One the vegetarians will be able to find food that will keep everyone alive or two they will die first because they aren’t eating what ever food you’ve found then if you have to cannibalize, there is no easy way to say this we just taste better. Think about it, mainly and the animals that you eat are vegetarians and they are yummy. Why wouldn’t a people vegetarian be yummy too? Just saying, but we do taste better.

4Qs Hoover...4Qs

4Qs Hoover ….4Qs

Being that it is Tuesday it is to for Tuesday and I have both the jobs today. Yay… not really yay but not boo either.

This just means it’s a short entry night. And I’m sure some of you are thinking oh thank you, he won’t ramble on endlessly. Although if you are thinking that it means you read regularly, so you may be just a bit more than happy to read anything, so you’re welcome and sorry that I tend to ramble some times.

On to a point, As it is tax time I’m just going to say it, DINKs suck, yup that’s right you all suck. If you know not what a DINK is, I’ll ‘splain. A DINK is a two income household with no children. Double Income No Kids.

Yeah I may be jealous but it still doesn’t change the fact that you all suck … well it does actually but I’m sticking to my point of view despite the facts because that is the American way and if you says different them is fightin’ words and gosh darn un American. And you don’t wanna be un American do you? Well do you? I didn’t think so. How do you like them apples. No seriously aren’t they the best. Yeah, oh and you still suck if you are a DINK. But not if your nickname is Dink then you are aces or other cool things.

In other news.

I’m plenty distracted. I’m going to leave it at that for now.

On to the shower thought of the day, was I should probably keep these things shorter to make them easier to read, allow ample time for editing and grow my readership.

Why, what do you think about in the shower?

No, I’m not narcissistic, I like to write and wonder what you like to read or really the length that you like to read. So really it was a selfless thought and all about you not me.

I have some really good thoughts in the shower though, I think the steam clears up my head a bit that or I just don’t like to look at myself naked and have to think to occupy my mind.

No… I won’t say it… but you did, you’re welcome for me not saying it. Oh and… nah, I’ll just leave that alone before I type any more Freud by accident.

My thoughts on a superhero

Recently I was reading an article of the strangest news items of 2010. Admittedly some of the stories were rather off the beaten path. One story that struck me as not really belonging in the group was one Seattle Washington. A group of people there have taken to the streets as caped crusaders. Not that any of them wear a cape. Now I know you may be thinking that this story certainly belongs in the bin with the strange happenings of the last year. If you are thinking this I’ll ask you to take a moment of pause and consider the following reasons why it is not so strange.

First, as citizens we want to have communities which are safe and crime free. We as citizens do have a responsibility to aid in providing for that safety. Primarily in the manner of not committing criminal acts or to Police your own actions.

Second as citizens we empower agencies and those in the employment of those agencies to provide protection and to serve the public in the performance of those duties. Corruption within those agencies is another topic.

Citizens policing them selves and citizens empowered by the community generally by statute to enforce the code of conduct of the community.

In an ideal society the first would simply be enough, that a community gathers together, establishes expected conduct and everyone conforms to the rules.

However we do not live in Utopia or even a suburban part of Utopia. We need the second group of people empowered to enforce the rules, because there will always be those who are willing to break the law. Theory abound about why crime occurs but that also another topic or group of topics, for now it should be sufficient to say crime will occur in every society.

Crime occurs from the lowest classes to the highest echelons of our society. Watch the news any day, pick up any paper and you’ll see it is prevalent. You will also hear that our law enforcement community is failing in protecting the citizens, our courts are addled by loopholes and self serving attorneys, our law makers do not make laws that are meaningful and the critical voices go on and on.

What you don’t hear among many of those critical voices is how to make it better. Just that what is being done is not working and or isn’t the right answer.

Solon, Greek Lawmaker and Statesman circa 600 BCE, stated that a society to effectively combat crime every citizen must be as outraged about any crime as if it had occurred to them.

Given this idea, any crime regardless of the victim should be viewed as if it happened to you. We are very far removed from this idea. We don’t even report crimes, we don’t press charges when we are offended against, we don’t provide witness, we work harder at getting out of jury duty then most of us do at our regular jobs. Then complain that our streets are filled with crime.

In the current economic state localities are cutting budgets and are not always able to fill vacant positions. So how do we solve the crime problem.

The traditions of public safety have always been based in the idea that we police ourselves and our communities. To give out the hue and cry when cry occurs and to be a truthful witness to wrongdoing when it does occur.

If we ignore the problem it will not go away.

So this group of “Superheroes” may have read the issues of Kick Ass or saw the movie and heard the question. Why hasn’t any one ever put on a costume and become a crime fighter.

The answer in the comic and the movie was, because you would get your ass kicked. However one guy does it, and he does get his ass kicked a little bit or a lot. But the point is he made a stand. That stand was to say no more will I ignore injustice when I can do something about it.

This group of people calling themselves the Rain City Superhero Movement isn’t really a far cry away from Curtis Sliwa’s response to crime on the subways in New York City and founding the Guardian Angels. It isn’t ever that far from the neighborhood watch patrols in thousands of communities across the country.

Citizens have always been a part of keeping our communities safe from those who will abuse the laws and take advantage of the complacency of others.

Phoenix Jones and other members of the RCSM are taking a stand. That stand is to put on the personas of crime fighter in costumes and help make their community safer.

Now there will be those who say he and the RCSM have no business doing what they are doing and they are likely to be killed.

My argument would be this that most people on neighborhood watches and those in the Guardian Angels, which still exists, are not harmed serious in the performance of citizen patrol. I did say most. There have been those killed doing both neighborhood watch and Guardian Angel patrols. There are also uniformed law enforcement officers killed every year.

I’m not able to put on the cape and mask and go on patrol but I can do my part in fighting crime.

There is what I think is the real story, that we all need to be our own version of a super hero and not ignore the wrong doing in our communities and be an active part in making our communities safer however we can. Not that this is a strange event of 2010 but more a wake up call that we all need to be a part of solving the problems in our lives and not looking for other people to solve them for us without our help.

I can not say everyone should put on a costume and fight crime but I do admire those in the RCSM and see that this isn’t just a laughable story to be put on page 8 or at the end of a news broadcast. They are real people saying that they can make a difference in their communities. Can you?
