Another year in the record books and a new one is on the annual path through the calendar. Time passing and resolutions are things that everyone seems to talk about at the turn of the old calendar to the new one.
Resolutions, I don’t make them and if you are long time reader you know this however if you are a new reader, I don’t make new year resolutions. Why you ask? Well simple because they are pointless and most people don’t bother keeping them, they have no intention of keeping them.
Wow those are very broad generalizations. Yes they are and I know there are probably those who do mean to keep them but they don’t. So my last resolution was not to make resolutions any more. So far so good.
However I think my problem with resolutions is deeper but wasn’t able to formulate the words until now. The focus is on a negative and look at the negative aspects. For example a resolution might be I smoke too much I need to quit. That is a negative statement about a negative thing and things that people don’t like.
I don’t smoke anymore so it wouldn’t be a change I want to make any longer. Then there is the rub change can be positive or it can be negative so simply saying I want to change something isn’t really much different.
We see resolutions as just bad things and being hard and insurmountable. Maybe semantics but success is all in how you look at things. Still with my new found look on the whole resolution thing doesn’t mean I’ll be making them again. If you want to change just make the change you want to make don’t wait for some date on a calendar to make a change you want to make. You don’t want to change if you are waiting and it gives you an excuse not to try.
The second thing is time passing. Time seems to go by more quickly as we age. However older people tend to count a minute slower than younger people. I think that when you are younger we look forward to things that are generally further off then when we are older.
It takes longer for the end of the school year to get here than the end of the week or hell the end of the day for that matter. As we get older we also think more about our mortality and we quit looking further down the road because it becomes less certain that well make it to goals if they are set too far into the future. Where younger people are more certain that they will be here longer and time seems to go by more slowly for them. I don’t know just a thought or three there.
